12/23/2022 0 Comments ShirodharaShirodhara is a traditional Ayurvedic healing practice that has been used for centuries to promote relaxation, balance, and wellness. This soothing treatment involves the steady flow of warm oil over the forehead, also known as the "third eye" area. The word "Shiro" means "head," and "Dhara" means "flow," so the literal translation of Shirodhara is "head flow."
Shirodhara is one of the essential techniques found within Ayurveda. Ayurveda, the age-old, all-encompassing science of health and longevity, is a distinctive Indian tradition that has existed for countless years. Ayurvedic therapies have a long history of fostering holistic health, emotional well-being, and the mind-body connection. These Ayurvedic practices help you overcome numerous health issues, leading to a healthier life with a greater sense of well-being. The Technique of Shirodhara This treatment usually follows our 60 or 90-minute Ayurvedic abhyanga marma massage, or the 45-min Ayurvedic head, face and neck massage, and begins with you lying down on the massage couch, with an incline headrest to collect the oil in a pot and offer comfort and support to your neck. We will then warm oil, typically sesame, and pour it over the third eye area and forehead in a steady, delicate stream. Up to one litre of herb-infused oil is poured from a special vessel called a "Dhara pot," which is suspended above the forehead. The flow of oil is usually maintained for about 30 minutes, during which you are encouraged to relax and let go of any thoughts or distractions. We also apply gentle pressure to the third eye area and may also massage the scalp and ears. This helps to stimulate the release of tension and promote relaxation. The massage will be finished when we wipe the oil off your forehead and head with a warm towel, and then you can rest for a few minutes. Benefits of Shirodhara Shirodhara is known for its ability to promote deep relaxation and balance the mind and body. The steady flow of warm oil over the third eye area is believed to stimulate the pineal gland, which is responsible for regulating the body's sleep-wake cycle. This can help to alleviate insomnia, anxiety, and depression. Shirodhara is also believed to have a soothing effect on the nervous system, helping to reduce stress and tension. The warm oil and gentle pressure applied to the third eye area are thought to stimulate the release of endorphins, the body's natural "feel-good" chemicals. This can help to improve mood and promote a sense of well-being. The massage is also beneficial for headaches and migraines, as it helps to release tension in the head, neck, and shoulders. It also improves blood circulation in the head, which can help to nourish the hair and promote healthy hair growth. Shirodhara is also known to have a rejuvenating effect on the skin, as the warm oil helps to nourish and hydrate the skin, leaving it looking and feeling smooth and soft. Aside from these incredible benefits, there is much more to gain from Shirodhara, including:
The Effects of Stress on the Body Stress is not something only experienced in the mind; it is felt throughout the entire body. While it's important to address stress from a psychological aspect, it is essential to soothe the body, as well. While stress is something we all have to deal with, that doesn't mean we can't manage it and live happy, healthy, and balanced lives. Stress takes on so many unique forms, and we all experience it differently. Some of us have stress from work, our families, our relationships, and our finances, while others feel it from food insecurity or a lack of support. Despite the source or intensity of stress, there is no denying that it takes a toll on our bodies. The amount of stress and the time you spend under its influence, the more likely it causes ailments, such as:
Final Thoughts Shirodhara is a deeply relaxing and rejuvenating treatment that has been used for centuries to promote balance and wellness. The steady flow of warm oil over the third eye area is believed to stimulate the release of tension, promote relaxation, and improve mood. If you are looking for a way to release stress and tension, improve sleep, and promote overall well-being, Shirodhara may be the perfect treatment for you.
