A Hidden Culprit Behind Unexplained Migraines, Eczema, and Insomnia

Picture

Do you suffer from headaches, fatigue, digestive issues, insomnia, or skin problems without apparent cause? You might be surprised to learn that these symptoms could be caused by histamine intolerance, a condition that is not well-known but affects many people.

In this article, we'll explore the symptoms of histamine intolerance, its causes, and how to manage it. We'll also introduce you to Genny Masterman, a woman in the UK who has created a website to raise awareness about this condition.

Symptoms of Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance symptoms can vary from person to person and can be confusing because they often mimic other health conditions. Common symptoms include:

  • Headaches and migraines
  • Hives and skin rashes
  • Digestive issues, such as nausea, bloating, and diarrhea
  • Fatigue
  • Runny nose or watery eyes
  • Flushing and sweating
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Anxiety and panic attacks

These symptoms are often triggered by certain foods, medications, and environmental factors. They can also be exacerbated by stress, hormonal changes, and other lifestyle factors.

When histamine levels increase, the lymphatic vessels dilate and become more permeable. This allows immune cells and fluid-containing antibodies to flow more easily into the affected tissue, aiding in the body's response to the allergen or injury.

However, prolonged or excessive dilation and permeability of the lymphatic vessels can lead to fluid accumulation, tissue swelling, and inflammation.

Causes of Histamine Intolerance

Histamine intolerance is caused by an inability to break down histamine effectively. Histamine is a chemical compound found in various foods and produced by the body's cells. It plays a critical role in the immune system and acts as a neurotransmitter. However, histamine levels can build up in people with histamine intolerance, leading to symptoms.

One of the primary causes of histamine intolerance is a deficiency of diamine oxidase (DAO), an enzyme that breaks down histamine in the gut. DAO deficiency can be caused by genetics, digestive issues, or other underlying medical conditions that affect DAO production.

Medications that block DAO activity or release histamine, such as non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), can also contribute to histamine intolerance.

Managing Histamine Intolerance

The primary treatment for histamine intolerance is to avoid or limit histamine-rich foods and beverages. These include:

  • Fermented foods, such as sauerkraut, kimchi, and yoghurt
  • Aged cheeses, such as cheddar, parmesan, and gouda
  • Cured meats, such as salami and ham
  • Citrus fruits, such as oranges and lemons
  • Vinegar and other acidic foods
  • Sulphites, food dyes and other food preservatives
  • Alcohol, especially wine and beer
  • Chocolate and other cocoa-containing products
  • Some nuts and seeds, such as cashews

A low-histamine diet may also be helpful for managing histamine intolerance symptoms. This involves avoiding high-histamine foods and increasing the intake of fresh, whole foods, such as fruits, vegetables, and lean protein sources.

Manual lymphatic drainage massage can help to alleviate the many symptoms of histamine intolerance by supporting the function of the lymphatic system.

Genny Masterman and Histamine Intolerance Awareness

Genny Masterman is a woman in the UK who has experienced histamine intolerance firsthand. She has created a website, histamineintoleranceawareness.org.uk, to raise awareness of this condition and provide information and support to others who may be suffering from it.

On her website, Genny provides a wealth of information about histamine intolerance, including its causes, symptoms, and management. She also offers practical advice on navigating a low-histamine diet and shares recipes and meal plans to help people get started.

Final Thoughts

Histamine intolerance is a condition that causes a wide range of symptoms, which can be confusing and frustrating for those who are suffering from it. However, with the right knowledge and management strategies, it is possible to alleviate symptoms and improve your quality of life.
