Frequently asked questions
What is Ayurveda?
Ayurveda, the Indian holistic science of well-being has been with us for thousands of years. In English it translates as ‘the knowledge, or science, of life’. Connected to yogic practices, this ancient naturopathic system of health care is built upon the mind-body connection.
Who can have a massage?
Can I get a massage treatment if I’m pregnant?
I do not currently offer treatments for pregnant women. There are many benefits to receiving a massage for pregnant women, however activating certain acupressure points or using certain oils might bring on labour, cause a miscarriage, or a blood clot. So please consult your doctor first to review your risk.
Do you offer massage treatments to men?
Yes, if I know them or if they have been referred by an existing client, and then only at my discretion.
Do you massage babies, children and young people?
I can treat young people between the ages of 16 to 18 years of age as long as a parent or guardian remains in the treatment room during the session and signs a consent form. The young person also needs to sign a consent form.
At this time I do not offer massage to children below the age of 16, but I may undertake specialist training in these areas in the future so please check back on the website again.
Will I need to complete any forms beforehand?
When making an appointment for the first time you will be asked to complete a mandatory online client record form and two COVID-19 pre-screening questionnaires for return by the day before your appointment. This is to ensure the treatment you have selected is suitable for you and that you are not a risk to other vulnerable clients and me.
What if I have a medical condition, injury, or an allergy?
If you have any medical conditions, injuries or allergies please make me aware of this beforehand. Your condition or injury may be contraindicated and may need to be further investigated by a GP before a treatment can take place. If you have been diagnosed with a condition, a letter from your GP or specialist stating that you are okay to receive a massage or Reiki treatment would be essential.
Are there conditions where massage is not recommended?
There are very few instances where massage is not recommended. You should not come for a massage if you are experiencing:
I’m not sure if I have Covid-19, what should I do if I have an appointment?
Will I face cancellation charges if I cancel at the last minute?
At Starling Holistic I take your health very seriously. The safety of all my clients, and my family is also very important to me. If you have COVID-19 symptoms, have tested positive or have been in contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, please contact me by telephone or email as soon as possible before your appointment. You should not come for a massage if you are suffering from or have been exposed to COVID-19 within the last seven days.
Signs to look out for include: Exhibiting any respiratory signs or symptoms, fever, continuous cough, loss or change in your sense of smell/taste, or any other flu-like symptoms (however mild).
We will need to reschedule your appointment.
I also ask that you bear with me if I need to reschedule your appointment at the last minute due to COVID-19 risk or illness.
Attending an appointment
Is there parking nearby?
There is a space on the drive to park your car. It’s close to the front door with step-free access to the downstairs treatment room and WC.
What payment types do you accept?
Due to COVID-19 I am asking, where possible, for clients to transfer payments online, to avoid cash handling. A link for online payment will be provided.
Do I need to wear a face covering?
You will need to wear a face covering to your appointment. You can remove the covering when laying face down on the massage couch, but will need to keep it on during your consultation, while laying face up on the treatment couch (apart from during a face treatment) and after your treatment until you leave the therapy room. Please bring your own face covering. If this is not possible, or you forget, I keep a small supply of disposable face coverings and can provide one. I will wear a face covering throughout your appointment. As COVID cases decline and restrictions lift, you may not be required to wear a face covering.
How do I amend my appointment?
If you want to amend your booking (and provided that amending or cancelling is not prohibited by the Terms and Conditions) this can be requested and completed by either:
· following the link in your booking confirmation email;
· directly via email to [email protected] or 07766 050837;
· making contact via the contact form
Will you send me a reminder?
Yes, I will send you a confirmation email upon booking; a reminder email 48 hours in advance; and a text 24 hours prior to your appointment (if you select this option when booking online). These are to help you avoid late arrivals, missed appointments, and the cancellation fee. Please make a note of your appointment in your calendar and do not rely on these messages as I ask everyone to take responsibility for the appointments they have booked.
Your first treatment
How do I prepare for my treatment?
What should I bring to the massage treatment?
While COVID is present please bring water with you. Other than that, only bring an intention to relax and unwind.
What should I wear for the massage or Reiki treatment?
During therapeutic Ayurvedic body massage a lot of oil is used. You will be required to remove your clothing down to your underwear. I’d recommend that you wear loose, warm, comfortable clothing and underwear that you don’t mind getting oil or stains on. The upper half of clothing is usually removed. Disposable thongs are available.
If your treatment includes an Ayurvedic head massage, or Shirodhara, please bring a cap, headscarf, or hat to protect your head from the wind, cold or sun for your journey home.
Reiki is performed fully clothed. Please wear light comfortable layers for this treatment.
When you arrive
Please aim to arrive five to ten minutes before your appointment time to ensure you benefit from the complete time you have booked.
What to expect
Once COVID-19 formalities are complete (temperature taken and hands sanitised), your session will begin with a personal consultation to ascertain your individual needs and tailor the treatment accordingly. I will explain what the treatment will involve and how it is suitable for your requirements, the effects of massage, health and safety, and answer any queries you may have.
What will happen during my massage treatment?
Before your massage, I will give you a towel to cover yourself with and allow you to undress privately while I leave the room. I’ll return when you are laying on the massage couch face down. If you need helping onto the couch, then I will help while keeping you wrapped in your towel. I’lI use professional towel techniques throughout your massage. Usually mobiles are turned off to allow for complete relaxation.
The room will be warm, the lights dimmed with blinds drawn and candles lit. Some relaxing music will play quietly in the background. The most appropriate oils for your needs will be chosen; they may differ for your head, face and body. Liberal amounts of warm, herb-infused medicated oil are applied to your body (and your head if you have booked a head massage). If you would prefer that no or little oil is used during your Ayurvedic head massage, please make me aware of this before I start.
I won’t usually initiate conversation, to allow you to switch off and relax. The only times I will speak will be to check the pressure and comfort levels with you. If pressure is too strong, I will adjust it.
A variety of massage techniques will be used during your treatment including my hands, thumbs, knuckles and elbows with various pressures. Usually medium strokes are applied with some attention paid to tension points on the upper body, working slightly deeper into the muscle tissue than others.
I’ll cover you appropriately, moving the towel to massage the areas of the body that I am focusing on and keeping other areas warm. At no time will you feel exposed or uncomfortable, and certainly never your breasts, pubic area or genitals.
If you’re too hot or become cold, or the position you’re lying in is uncomfortable, please let me know. Additional bolsters, pillows and support are available. During the treatment blankets and towels will prevent you from feeling cold. If you do happen to feel any pain, please tell me immediately.
After your massage, I will leave the room to allow you to rest for a few minutes. To finish I’ll ensure you have some water or herbal tea to drink and will leave the room to allow you time and privacy to get up slowly and get dressed.
To complete your treatment
I’ll offer some recommendations to address any imbalances and support your wellness journey.
What should I do after my treatment?
To ensure that you feel the full benefit from your treatment I’d recommend that you:
Can I extend my treatment?
If you wish to extend the time you have booked during your treatment, I will try to fulfil your request, but it is subject to my availability. If it’s possible to extend your treatment, an additional charge will be applied as per the prices shown on this website, which will be charged against the payment method used to book your treatment.
Will there be any side effects after my massage?
It is common for your muscles to feel temporarily tired or heavy. You may feel tired, or develop a headache. This is due to the toxins being released from your muscles. These symptoms are completely normal and should pass within 24 hours.
Do you leave the room to allow me to get undressed?
Yes. Your privacy is respected.
What if I am embarrassed about my body?
I understand that. I care about creating an atmosphere in which you will feel totally at ease. Your dignity will be protected at all times using towels to comfortably cover your body and protect your modesty.
Should I shave my legs before a treatment?
It is not necessary to shave prior to a treatment. Please don’t feel embarrassed if you have hair on your body, it doesn’t affect the treatment I offer.
Can I stop a massage if I feel uncomfortable?
Absolutely. You are always in control of your massage therapy session. Feel free to ask me to pause or stop your massage if you’re uncomfortable with any aspect of this treatment.
Should I try to stay awake during my massage treatment?
No, this is your time to enter a deeply relaxed and meditative state. The music will be playing and I will be focusing on my job. It is very common to drift in and out of sleep during a treatment. I will take this as a compliment that you’re feeling at ease and relaxed with me. Your body and mind will still be gaining benefit from the massage while you are asleep.
I will wake you gently to turn you over when required and at the end of the treatment, so you don’t need to worry about anything.
Will the massage be painful?
No, it should not be painful at all. Everybody is different when it comes to pressure. What feels right to one client might feel painful for another or too light and ineffective for someone else. I will check in with how this feels as it needs to be just right for you. I will never be offended if you ask me to adjust pressure during a session.
Can I listen to my own music?
I will provide a selection of relaxing music. If you would prefer to remain silent or bring your own music I am happy to accommodate this.
Will the oil ruin my clothes or mess up my hair and make-up?
The oils could stain your clothing, so to be on the safe side please wear something that you won’t mind getting oil on.
Some massage techniques could disrupt your make-up or hair but we can discuss what I can do to cause no or minimal disruption to these if this is a concern. Just inform me before I start.
Some of the treatments I offer such as Ayurvedic head massage can be adapted to be performed without oil. You will miss out on the full effects so I would encourage you to find a time when you can have the full treatment, but I understand if that’s not possible.
Do you offer a free 30-minute consultation every time?
Follow up treatments involve a brief pre-treatment consultation (usually 5 minutes) to see how you have been since the last treatment.

Will the oil get in my eyes during my Shirodhara treatment?
No. Your eyes will be covered by cotton pads infused with rose water and a headband placed on top to prevent any oil getting into the eyes. As a qualified Ayurvedic Massage Therapist I take precautions to prevent the oil entering the eyes or ears during Shirodhara.
What are the side effects of Shirodhara?
