Understanding terms used in Ayurveda
Marma Points
Marma therapy is one of Ayurveda’s most powerful tools for relaxation and rejuvenation. Marmas can be thought of as vital energy points where muscle, veins, ligaments, bones and joints meet. There are 107 Marma points described in Ayurvedic texts along with their specific effects on both body and mind.
Marmas connect to the Nadis (subtle nerves) and Chakras (energy centres) of the subtle body and the mind. At Marma sites toxins, stress and negative emotions get lodged and are held, sometimes for years. Disease can be reflected in pain, blockage or swelling in these areas even before it may manifest as the full range of outward symptoms. Ayurveda treats Marmas with careful pressure (similar to acupressure), and warm, aromatic oils or herbs to draws toxins out and bring nourishment to the skin and muscles. Marma therapy can be used to balance Prana (vital energy) and increase Sattva (clarity of the higher mind) to effectively balance the nervous system and harmonise emotions. |
Hot Herbal Poultices (Pinda Sweda)This unique Ayurvedic treatment uses a steamed poultice made of cooked grains and medicinal herbs bundled in a soft cotton bag. Warm, medicated oils are massaged over the skin before the poultice is applied with varied pressure in a light rhythmical way to combine massage and sweat therapy. It is excellent in treating Vata and Kapha disorders since both these doshas are cold in nature.
Pinda Sweda helps promote the elimination of toxins by enhancing circulation and blood flow, relieve sore and achy muscles and nourish the skin while leaving you feeling relaxed and invigorated. Especially beneficial for those with stiffness of joints and muscles, sprains, generalised or local back pain, stiff neck, frozen shoulder and arthritis. It is also recommended for sinus related ailments, hormonal imbalances, menopause and to provide relief from headaches and migraines. |
Your Prakriti and VikritiAyurvedic principles of wellbeing are highly individualised - everyone is born with a unique mind-body constitution (Prakriti, meaning ‘nature’) which determines physical, physiological character, and susceptibility to disease. Vikriti is our current state, and is often referred to as our ‘imbalance’.
Both Prakriti and Vikriti are composed of the three primary functional energy types (Doshas). Understanding Prakriti and Vikriti and correcting any Doshic imbalance, through massage, marma therapy, diet, herbal supplements, lifestyle, yoga and meditation, is a key concept in maintaining an optimal level of health. |
The Tri-Dosha ConceptAyurveda uses the concept of Dosha imbalance to explain how disease occurs. The three primary functional energy types (Doshas) in the body are Vata, Pitta and Kapha. They are made from the five elements... Space, Air, Fire, Water and Earth which combine in varying proportions.
● Vata dosha consists of space and air and is responsible for movement within the body: respiration, blood flow, musculoskeletal movement, movement of thoughts. It can be visualised as the wind. Vata types are restless, active and creative and exhaust easily. They are sensitive to wind, cold and dryness, and feel better in conditions of warmth, moisture, rest and nurturing support. ● Pitta dosha consists of fire and water and is responsible for generating heat within the body, metabolism and assimilation. It can be visualised as a flammable liquid. Pitta types are determined, motivated individuals with a strong appetite and good circulation and can easily overheat or run into conflict. They feel better in conditions of coolness and calm. ● Kapha dosha consists of water and earth and is responsible for creating the structure and support of bodily tissues. It can be visualised as clay. Kapha types are emotional, caring individuals, and have slower metabolisms. They are sensitive to dampness and stagnant air and feel better in conditions of warmth, dryness and increased activity. Both Prakriti and Vikriti are specific proportions of the three Doshas. Every individual will fall into one of the seven types of constitution: 1. Vata 2. Pitta 3. Kapha 4. Vata-Pitta 5. Pitta-Kapha 6. Vata-Kapha 7. Vata-Pitta-Kapha The Doshas are always changing, just like life is always changing. We are constantly being influenced by our environment, emotions, diet, stress levels, relationships, and seasonal changes. Ayurveda helps us with this moment to moment awareness. |
Srotas - Channels of CirculationThe body contains a large number of channels. These channels are called srotas or srotamsi (plural). They are both physiological and energetic in nature. The srotas are responsible for communication, carrying products of food from the gastro-intestinal tract to the basic tissues as nourishment and perform vital functions within the body. They include arteries, veins, lymphatics and the genital-urinary tract, as well as very fine channels like the capillaries. If the circulation in the srotas is impaired or blocked, the circulating substances accumulate in the channels and metabolism of the tissue (dhātu agni) is affected. The buildup of toxins, undigested food and retention of waste is called Ama which can spread around the body through the channels that are still functioning. Each with its distinct function, the channels unite individual components of the body.
